Pianist Charles Owen has appeared widely in Britain and across Europe as a concerto soloist and chamber music artist. He is the co-creator of the London Piano Festival with his frequent duo partner, pianist Katya Apekisheva. Owen is a professor of piano at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and has been active as an educator elsewhere. His substantial recording catalog includes the 2024 release The Young Schumann.Owen was born in Cambridge, England, in 1971 and grew up in the Hampshire and Worcestershire regions. His family was not musical; his father was a clergyman, his mother a teacher, and his brother became a Mercedes race car designer. A pianist in his father's congregation noticed his talent and gave him some lessons, and he was quickly enrolled at the Yehudi Menuhin School in Stoke d'Abernon, where he studied with Seta Tanyel. Owen went on to the Royal College of Music in London, where his principal teachers were Imogen Cooper and Irina Zaritskaya. Owen won several major prizes in the mid-'90s, including a silver medal at the Scottish International Piano Competition in 1995. Some of his performances there were issued on the competition's annual album release, and his commercial recording debut came a year later on the Dorian label when he backed cellist Christoph Stradner on the album Turn of the Century Cello. He made his solo recording debut in 2003 on the Somm label with the album Janáček: Piano Music.Owen has appeared as a soloist both in Britain, with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, among other groups, and abroad with the Łódź Philharmonic in Poland and the Moscow State Academic Symphony. He is an active chamber player who has appeared with leading string quartets, including the Takács, Wihan, and Sacconi Quartets, and as an accompanist to such artists as violinists Sarah Chang, Renaud Capuçon, and Augustin Hadelich. He often performs as part of a duo with pianist Katya Apekisheva, with whom he recorded piano versions of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and Petrushka ballets for the Quartz label in 2018. Owen has also recorded for Signum Classics, Orchid Classics, and most often for Avie, where he released the recital The Young Schumann in 2024. He is an active educator, serving on the faculty of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, as a visiting professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, and giving master classes and school classes as part of his role as U.K. Ambassador for the Steinway & Sons piano firm.
